What is the CROSSTRAP® trap?

CROSSTRAP® is a modern trap for capturing coleopteran insects in flight. It was developed as part of an R&D project (University of Murcia - ECONEX) with the aim of developing traps and attractants for forest insects.

This product is patented as CROSS-VANE TRAP WITH SLIDING TREATMENT FOR INSECT TRAPPING (ES1076374U). It is a protected trademark in Spain (M2873513/7), the European Union (A013219001) and the United Kingdom (UK00913219001), as well as in Australia, China, Iran, Japan and South Korea. It also has OMDF registration number (Spanish Ministry of Agriculture): 153/2013

It is a versatile trap that allows for:

  1. Monitoring
  2. Mass capture
  3. Scientific research

CROSSTRAP® traps are resistant and have been improved over the years.

Composition

These traps consist of a polypropylene lid with a central carabiner attached to a stainless-steel spring and two reinforced PVC sheets anchored at the top to the lid by four stainless steel springs that act as shock absorbers against strong winds, helping to prevent damage to the trap. At the bottom, the reinforced PVC sheets are attached by steel springs to a 30 cm diameter polypropylene funnel. At the end of the funnel is the container for retaining the captured insects.

The PVC sheets, funnel and collection cup are treated with a sliding film.

New funnel:

To help reduce environmental impact, a removable funnel has been launched in 2024, following several years of research, which optimises trap transport and reduces carbon emissions.

Types of collectors:

Depending on the purpose of the trap, choose between the CROSSTRAP® DRY COLLECTOR (with slide) or CROSSTRAP® WET COLLECTOR (with slide).

The CROSSTRAP® DRY COLLECTOR (with slide) container has a stainless-steel mesh at the bottom that allows rainwater to drain out. It has an approximate capacity of 1 litre (11 cm diameter x 13.5 cm high). It is used for dry or live capture.

The CROSSTRAP® WET COLLECTOR (with slide) container has an approximate capacity of 1 litre (11 cm diameter x 13.5 cm).

Wet catches allow for accurate identification of the capture. To do this, we recommend filling the collector with 10 ml of propylene glycol diluted to 10 or 20%, or, if necessary, using car antifreeze. This liquid serves both to kill the catch and as a preservative, provided it is not diluted too much by rain, in which case it should be replaced.

Placement and handling

Traps should be hung by using a string, either between two trees or from a branch, always ensuring that they are vertical and do not come into contact with the tree trunk.

The height at which the trap is installed is not important, but it should be hung so that it does not touch the ground or any other object. The metal support ECONEX SUPPORT FOR FOREST TRAPS (Code: UIPFETA147) designed for this purpose can also be used.

It is recommended to install it in places with good visual accessibility for insects, such as forest edges, forest tracks or firebreaks.

Activating the trap

The traps are activated by placing the attractants in the holes in the sheet.

The number of traps to be placed will depend on the size of the forest and the target insect. For further information, please consult the technical data sheet for the target insect.

Early detection of forest pests

For early detection of invasive species, at least one CROSSTRAP® trap baited with bait should be installed in areas at high risk of entry of exotic saproxylic and bark beetle species, such as border inspection points, customs warehouses, ports or airports with movement of goods.

For early detection, we recommend using the CROSSTRAP® DETECTION KIT attractant and opting for wet captures, as this will allow for accurate identification of the specimens. We recommend collecting the captures at least every two weeks.

The traps can be installed in open spaces inside the facilities, suspended on artificial or natural supports. It is also advisable to install between 1 and 10 traps in the forest areas closest to the points studied in order to increase detection efficiency.

Duration

The trap can be operational for up to 7 years, due to its construction and high-resistance components.
